One of England's finest and most complete Jacobean houses, Chastleton House is filled with a mixture of rare and everyday objects, furniture and textiles collected since 1612. It was continuously occupied by one family and the Trust has concentrated on conserving the house, rather than restoring it. The gardens are Elizabethan and Jacobean in layout and it was here that the rules of modern croquet were codified.
