In a single street in London, separated by a wall, are the homes of two of history’s most significant musical artists. 25 Brook Street is the house that belonged to George Frideric Handel and the place where he composed some of the world’s most enduring baroque music, including Messiah. On the top floor of 23 Brook Street is the flat where, two centuries later, Jimi Hendrix lived with his girlfriend, record player and guitar. Both were the homes of musical innovators who chose London and changed music.

We continue our A Year in the Life of Handel exhibition series with an in depth look at 1723 – the year in which Handel took up residence in his Brook Street home. It was a busy year for the composer as his career flourished in the rich cultural life of Georgian London. Loans from national museums will join items from Handel House’s own collection to illustrate highlights of the worlds of theatre, art, literature, politics and science. As before the exhibition will be researched and written by our own Volunteers

The Stillness of the Evening

Two great works in C Minor open and close this concert, both making use of ‘scordatura’, that is, re-tuning. For Bach’s fifth cello suite the cellist must retune his highest string down a tone to G, to give the instrument greater resonance in the key. For the viola d’amore, no standard tuning exists, and so the six (or seven) strings of the two d’amores in Biber’s Partita - the seventh and final piece from his Harmonia artificioso-ariosa, are tuned to a chord of C Minor. The unusual instrument (which is rarely heard other than in performances of Bach’s St. John Passion, also with a pair) gains more resonance by having the same number of sympathetic strings, which run through the instrument’s bridge but are not played, giving the instrument a distinctive sound, which Leopold Mozart described as “especially charming in the stillness of the evening”. These pieces are separated by a lively arrangement by Bach for solo harpsichord of a concerto by his contemporary, (and incidentally also a d’amore player) Vivaldi.

An exciting musical journey in time and space. Baroque counterpoint, pulse, grace, rock energy, freedom of improvisation, ontemporary precision, drive and electronics.
Ensemble Alchemia preforms an eclectic programme including Handel, Rameau, improvisations on Hendrix’s Purple Haze, pieces by Jacob Ter Veldhuis, Maurice Eggert and Chiel Meijering.

Julien Feltrin and Kasia Tomczak-Feltrin preform on two baroque ‘companions’, the harpsichord and the recorder, in acoustic, amplified soundscape, together with live electronics, tape and video projections.

BHS: Favoured by Handel

Japanese harpsichordist Naoko Akutagawa presents, as in her previous appearance at Handel House, one of the newly-discovered Suites by Gottlieb Muffat, the important Viennese keyboard master from whom Handel borrowed so liberally. This will only be the second public performance of the work, the first having been at the memorial concert in Belfast for the brilliant young musicologist Alison Dunlop, author of an important new biography of the composer. Muffat is framed by two masterpieces by J.S. Bach: the seldom-heard Prelude, Fugue and Allegro for lute or harpsichord, and the ever-popular G-major French Suite. Miss Akutagawa continues her series of critically-acclaimed CDs for Naxos this year with four world-premiere recordings of Suites by Gottlieb Muffat.

Magisterial Bach

Bach composed the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, BWV 1007-1012 during his tenure as Kapelmeister for Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, between 1717 and 1723. Bach was not required to produce church music for this Calvinist court, and so this period saw the creation of some of Bach’s greatest instrumental works, including the Brandenburg concerti, orchestral suites, many keyboard works, and the Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin, in which the polyphonic capabilities of what is essentially a single-voiced instrument were exploited to higher levels than ever before. Their sister works, the cello suites, seem to explore how much can be left off the page and hinted at, but still present a work as complex as those for the violin. In this way Bach invites the listener’s ear to complete the composition, his and her imagination forming an integral part of the performance. These are works that were only published 100 years after their composition, and then as studies, fit for the practice room and nowhere else. It was not until the 20th century that they were performed in their entirety and their immense value was first appreciated en masse. Since then they have been recorded numerous times, regularly appear on concert programs given by the world’s greatest artists, and form the center of every cellist’s study and creative effort. They continue to challenge both the performer and listener to bring his and her absolute best in grappling with the language and imagination of this undisputed master.

The Rose and The Ring

Le Chevalier de St Georges was the son of a slave from La Guadeloupe and a French aristocrat. In addition to being a prolific composer St Georges was a distinguished swordsman. Symphonie Concertante is a delightful work in two movements featuring brilliant writing for 2 solo violins.
It is probable that nearly all Bach’s harpsichord concertos were originally existed in other instrumental versions. The beautiful slow movement of his Concerto in F minor has had many arrangements of it made.
Nicholas Jackson’s Opera based on Thackeray’s ‘The Rose & the Ring’ written in 1854 as ‘A Children’s Pantomime or ‘The History of Prince Giglio & Prince Bulbo’.The opera consists of orchestrations and added vocal lines to Harpsichord Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti. Divertimento contains instrumental versions of many of the sonatas used in the opera which is being performed at Drapers’ Hall and then at The Charterhouse in the City on 5th May prior to being recorded. This will be the first performance of the Divertimento.

The practice of performing baroque songs with voice and bass alone has largely been abandoned, but was, in the 17 & 18C, considered a viable alternative to keyboard or viol consort accompaniment, creating a totally different sound world as the two lines, voice and bass, weave together. Following on from their performance at Handel House last year, ARCATA la mode return with more songs from the 1698 publication, The a la mode Musician, and Robert Jones’ 2nd book of songs. Some songs accompanied solely by the cello taking the continuo bass line ‘the pleyne way’, others with complex interweaving lines, composed specifically for voice and bass.

Maverick and Antiquity

History’s greatest composers have always found great inspiration in musical fashions from the past at a time when this would have made them seem eccentrically archaic. Music lovers have historically clambered for the latest trends and nowhere was this more pronounced than in Mozart’s Vienna. However, fascinated by the work of Bach and Handel he unearthed in Baron van Sweiten’s library, Mozart was inspired to compose this highly unusual and distinctly old-fashioned keyboard suite in homage to a past era. The programme highlights this sadly neglected gem, performed, appropriately on the harpsichord.

BHS: A Portrait of Europe

Francois Couperin (1668-1733) was one of the great masters of harpsichord style in 18th century France. His music was of a consistently high quality and he was highly prolific. However, despite being a respected harpsichordist and composer at the court of Louis XIV, he was 45 years old when his first book of harpsichord pieces was published. This book contains 5 ‘ordres’, Couperin’s alternative name for ‘suites’. The second ‘ordre’ is lengthy, at 22 separate movements, and comprises “Dance Pieces” and “Character Pieces”.
The fragile and introvert character of Couperin’s music is in contrast to that of Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757). Scarlatti wrote more than 555 harpsichord sonatas, all of a unique character and originality, and which focus on the brighter register of the harpsichord. Scarlatti arrived in Lisbon in 1719 as music teacher to the Portuguese princess Maria Magdalena Barbara before moving to Seville, and later Madrid. These three F-minor sonatas are representative of the Spanish style he will have been exposed to during these years.
The last composer in this programme, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), was a hugely influential figure in the development the early Classical style. One of the better-known sons of Johann Sebastian Bach, CPE Bach’s treatise, An Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments (1753) is an important document that inspired later generations of players and is still read today.

The Beauty of Bach

Bach’s use of the recorder was a significant one; it appears, for example, as a solo instrument in two of his Brandenburg Concertos as well as playing a significant role in around a tenth of his cantatas. Despite this clear affection and understanding of the instrument, Bach never wrote a solo sonata for the recorder. Ian Wilson and Kasia Tomczak-Feltrin give a tantalizing glimpse into what a Bach Recorder Sonata might have been like by performing transcriptions of works for other instruments. Performing two violin sonatas with particularly lyrical qualities and a sunny flute sonata, the qualities of the recorder that appealed to Bach are thoroughly explored.
Kasia and Ian have a long relationship with the museum, performing here regularly since it opened in 2001.

Expression and Creativity

In this concert you’ll be taken on a journey. Through music, poetry, storytelling and visual images Amy Fitz Doyley aims to demonstrate what freedom of expression and creativity looks and feels like to her.

After spending the past year performing & writing as part of collective The Se7en Ei8hts & supporting the likes of Gregory Porter, Roy Aires and Public Enemy in concert, Amy is now forging her way forward as a solo artist in her own right, more than ever before.
Previously described as a “one woman musical army", Amy uses an intuitive approach to music making, experimenting with a variety of different instruments and sounds - all without preconceived ideas or expectations of the final product. It is this spontaneous and improvised method of working that has allowed her to find freedom as well as the courage to craft and develop new works.

Her ambition is to marry art forms & dissolve the borders that sometimes exist between each, in a bid to allow for a more holistic devising experience. In this concert her main weapons of choice are; the Korg Electribe [Ableton Live 9] Music Production Station, Fender Squier Bronco Bass, TC Helicon vocal station, & an antique wooden winding music box.

Motivated by the desire to hone her creative songwriting & composing skills, a debut album released on her own record label is what she has always had her sights set on & she is happy to be able to share this with her audience this coming June.

If These Keys Could Speak

Daniel Trumbull, winner of the 2015 Broadwood Horniman Harpsichord Competition, invites you to explore the history of one of the most famous harpsichords ever built: the Colmar Ruckers. Created in 1624 by the legendary Ioannes Ruckers in Antwerp, it was treasured for its unique sound, passed through many hands, surviving wars and the French Revolution, and ended up in the possession of the infamous de Sade family. Music by John Philips, Louis and François Couperin, George Frideric Handel, and others. A copy of the Colmar Ruckers is owned by Handel & Hendrix and will be used in the concert.

Handel's Hollander

Though Willem de Fesch was born and raised in the Netherlands in 1710, after a disastrous post as maestro de capella in Antwerp he heeded the call of the metropolis of London, where he met the great Handel and spent the rest of his life, at times in competition with Handel, and at times his most trusted player, concertmaster of his orchestra. As a composer, de Fesch had been publishing small and large scale works since his twenties, and for this program, the Amsterdam-based ensemble, 't Kabinet explores a few of his intimate chamber sonatas and the influence that Handel had upon them.

The programme is in fact an elegant overview of various dances that starts in Renaissance to end up in early – classical pieces of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The purpose of the concert is to show a progress in understanding of the dace in the music of German and Polish composers of those times. The remarkably clear dance elements in the pieces of Jan z Lublina find their echo in Chaconne with the masterly harpsichord variations by Handel. Finally, the idealistic polonaises by W.F Bach lost with their tempo following the deep expression and individualism of the piece, forgetting about former dance exactness. These last pieces turn to be much closer to fantasies than to a dance. Hence the direct transition to the sophisticated fantasies of Empfindsamer still which are the culmination of the concert.

Ensemble Eroica Presents

This concert is the first in Ensemble Eroica’s series, promoting London’s best young chamber groups and individual artists. All members of the scheme are regular performers withEnsemble Eroica.

Having been praised for their “great control and dynamic subtlety” by The Strad, the Artesian Quartet have appeared at the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room. Since their formation in 2009 they have forged a reputation as one of the UK’s leading young string groups. In their Handel & Hendrix debut the quartet present a programme of familiarity and high energy. Haydn’s String Quartet in G, Op. 76 No. 1 is a work of witty deviation from the established forms of the time, employing engaging dialogue which flits between the four parts. Handel was an absolutely must for a debut programme, and highlights were chosen to represent his wonderful Water Music.

Handel’s operas were performed by the greatest singers of the age, many of whom were adored musical celebrities brought to London from Italy and paid many times more than any other performer. Much of the vocal music that Handel wrote was bespoke – written specially for the people who had been engaged to give the world premieres of his latest operas.

This programme explores not only the extraordinary characters created by Handel for the stage – including Alcina, Rodelinda and Cleopatra, but also the vocal abilities of three of the virtuosic women who sang the roles – the sopranos Francesca Cuzzoni, Anna Maria Strada and Elisabeth Duparc.

BHS Harpsichord Duets

Dan Tidhar and Francis Knights, Britain’s most active harpsichord duo, present a programme contrasting canonic works by Bach with two modern pieces.

Bach’s canonic explorations date from the end of his career, and combine rigorous counterpoint with a lyrical, playful imagination. Also included are transcriptions of concerto and organ works for four hands and two keyboards, including the monumental Passacaglia in C minor.

The two modern pieces, by Stephen Dodgson (1924-2013) and Joanna Marsh, date from nearly half-a-century apart, but both are portrayals, one of bells and the other of a duel – an idea well suited to the duet format.

Henry Purcell was both preceded and succeeded as organist of Westminster Abbey by his musical father John Blow. The keyboard music of both these great figures is strangely enough scarcely known. Hungarian harpsichordist and organist Zsombor Tóth-Vajna will rectify this with a recital of the characteristic music of Blow and Purcell, full of splendid eccentricities in both melody and harmony. Anchored by two songs written respectively in the twelfth and seventeenth centuries by the mysterious Comtessa de Dia (fl.c.1175) and the more familiar Henry Purcell (1659-1695), this concert presents a diverse range of both improvised and composed repertories.
Contrasting sonatas by the Italian Ursuline nun Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704) and French composer Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1665-1729) feature alongside two English examples of divisions on grounds from the court of Elizabeth I and from a later collection of 1706. Punctuating these works are two solos for viola da gamba and theorbo: the heartrending Les Pleurs by M. de Sainte-Columbe (c.1640-1700), and two movements by the innovative Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger (c.1580-1651). The musicians in this concert are current or past students of the Royal College of Music’s Historical Performance department. Mind the Gap

The colours and textures of four classical guitars bring to life a wonderfully inventive, eclectic mix of repertoire. Mēla quartet’s arrangements of organ works by J.S. Bach and César Franck are jutaposed with contemporary pieces first imagined for harpsichord (Stephen Dodgson’s Change-Ringers) and pieces inspired by Jimi Hendrix and other contemporary styles.

The Australian composer Philip Houghton’s piece Opals demonstrates his mastery of timbral writing for four guitars, “My world changed when I heard Jimi Hendrix and later on John Williams, Alirio Diaz and Julian Bream. Before that it had been the voice of John Lennon, Bugs Bunny cartoons, rain on the roof, cicadas, crickets and radio static.”

Bryan Johanson’s homage to Hendrix and Handel, Pluck, Strum and Hammer, includes quotes from works by both musicians that Johanson describes as, “passing each other in the score like two good neighbours passing each other in the street”.
Mēla quartet have been performing with each other for 2 years and have recently recorded a CD of chamber music by Stephen Dodgson collaborating with the Eden-Stell guitar duo, violinist Hartmut Richter and soprano Antonia Gentile. Mēla were International Guitar Foundation “Young Artists” and performed at venues throughout the U.K. including King’s Place, London.
The quartet all play on guitars by master luthier Michael Gee.
