Entertaining Elizabeth: Jousts, jesters and music

Prepare your bow and perfect your curtsey as you meet Queen Elizabeth I on her royal progress to Audley End. Join in the merry making with minstrels and music as the Duke of Norfolk will be welcoming her royal highness to this exquisite Essex estate. Join her loyal followers and learn the rules of courtly etiquette, marvel at the thrilling theatrical delights and witness the skill at arms of the Tudor jousters on horseback as her father would have enjoyed. Entertainment fit for a queen!

Fool School

Feeling foolish? Want to learn how to turn a miserable monarch into a sniggering sovereign? Meet masters of mirth this half term at Audley End as they entertain you with their pithy plays. There'll be stories aplenty as children will learn some of the skills and tricks used by court fools to entertain royalty.

Life Above and Below Stairs at Audley End

Put on your apron and get your riding crop at the ready as you join us at Audley End as it’s brought to life this weekend. Come face to face with Mrs Crocombe as she prepares a meal for the family, bump into the stable-hand while they’re grooming the horses, and meet Governess Miss Dormer and other members of staff as they organise the children for the day. Costumed characters will bring Audley End back to its Victorian heyday every weekend.

Victorian Values Discovery Visit

Explore the life of a Victorian servant in a completely different way - meet Mrs Warwick, the formidable housekeeper to the Braybrooke family at Audley End House. Students will find out about life in the Service Wing and hear the tales of the servants who toiled there, before trying their hand at activities such as sheet-folding and vegetable preparation in the new purpose-built education room. Groups are encouraged to come dressed in Victorian costume. Servants' aprons are provided.
Duration: 1 1/2 hours
Key Stage: 1, 2, History
Book a free tour to follow the workshop and use it to compare the grand rooms of the masters with the stark accommodation for the servants.
