Mary Webb: Journeys in Colour
Journeys in Colour continues this spring with a further chance to see this major exhibition dedicated to the work of Suffolk-based artist Mary Webb. On display you will find striking abstract paintings, screen prints, drawings and collages exploring colour and form.
Mary Webb is influenced by landscape and much of her work reflects on her travels. You will see a new series of work, inspired by a trip to Utah in the United States, which has never been seen before. Other works relate to places in the region, including Dunwich in Suffolk and Brancaster in Norfolk.
Mary Webb studied fine art at the University of Newcastle and Chelsea School of Art before teaching at Harrogate for two years. From 1966 until 1990, Mary taught painting at Norwich school of Art (now Norwich University College of the Arts).
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated book, available from the Sainsbury Centre Gallery Shop.

Avi Gupta Photography Exhibition
The work has been specially commissioned for the launch of the Sainsbury Centre's contemporary gallery. The photographs, which have been shot in domestic interiors in both the United States and India, reveal Avi Gupta's exploration of themes such as globalisation, migration and the nature of the modern world.
This new body of work is inspired by thet artist's own experiences of growing up as part of the Bengali community in the Washington area and his regular visits to the homeland of his parents.

Japan Kingdom of Characters
The exhibition will feature many characters from television, computer games, comics and commercial merchandise that have become much-loved household names around the world, among children and adults alike. The display will include large 3D models of characters such as Ultraman and Pokemon, Pikachu, as well as a Hello Kitty bedroom.
The exhibition asks some thought-provoking questions. What exactly are 'characters'? Why do characters appear and become popular? What kind of social reality do they reflect? Kingdom of Characters will introduce you to a world of characters and consider their impact on Japanese society.

JAPAN: Kingdom of Characters
This vibrant exhibition offers the chance to encounter characters from television, computer games and comics. Many have become much-loved household names around the world.
Kingdom of Characters comes to the Sainsbury Centre following displays in Manila and Sydney. Providing an overview of manga and anime through the second half of the 20th century, the exhibition provides a unique insight into the cultural phenomenon.
It will also give fans the chance to come face-to-face with some of their favourite characters, including human-sized Ultraman, Pikachu and a Hello Kitty ‘skipping’ through the gallery.
As well as 3D characters, the exhibition includes graphic illustrations and even a room-set of a teenager’s Hello Kitty bedroom. The set has also been specially designed by the Sainsbury Centre to allow younger visitors the chance to peep into the room, which is decorated with merchandise featuring Kitty in her many manifestations, from duvet-cover to alarm clock. Anime screenings and graphic illustrations are included in the exhibition and create a context for the visiting characters.
The exhibition asks some thought-provoking questions about what characters are, why they are so popular and how they have become central to everyday life within contemporary Japanese society. The exhibition also considers ideas such as the importance of character as design products.

Manga Dreams: Anderson and Low
Photographers Jonathan Anderson and Edwin Low have collaborated since 1990, achieving consistent critical acclaim. This extraordinary work blurs the distinction between photography and other forms of visual art, using old and new technologies to explore concepts of identity.
This exhibition features highlights of a recent Anderson and Low project, Manga Dreams, parts of which were featured in the 2011 Venice Biennale. Using subjects hand-picked by the artists over many months and years, the series combines photography and digital technologies to create a strikingly intense merging of the real and the fictional. The images use this hybrid reality to explore the impact of manga and anime on youth culture world-wide, the impact of which is noticeable globally in its adoption be individuals as diverse as Chinese business women and the singer Lady Gaga.
Manga Dreams will be the first museum exhibition of this work in the UK and the first in a series of similar exhibitions worldwide: it accompanies the book of the same title, published in 2010, and available in the Sainsbury Centre shop.

There Is Here: Photographs by Avi Gupta
The exhibition presents a series of photographs of domestic interiors shot in Washington DC and in Kolkata, India. These poetic images are devoid of people yet filled with human presence, leaving the viewer with the sense that something had just happened or is about to happen.
The photographs show found situations, untouched by the artist yet framed by him to highlight subtle details and unexpected juxtapositions.
Avi Gupta’s parents emigrated from India to the United States and his work is influenced by the experience of growing up as part of the Bengali community in the Washington area. His photographs are both personal and linked to universal themes, with explorations of globalisation, value systems and cultural hybridity shown through the detail of domestic life.
Avi Gupta is director of photography, publications at US News & World Report and his photographs have been published in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Washington Times and The New Yorker. His work has been displayed in exhibitions around the United States and is held in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.

The First Moderns: Art Nouveau, from Nature to Abstraction
Drawing on the Sainsbury Centre's permanent collections, The First Moderns highlights the role of artists and designers of the art nouveau style in the rise of modernism. The display offers an opportunity to see the Centre's Anderson Collection of Art Nouveau in a new way, comparing the naturalistic vitality of René Lalique's jewellery, and glass by Emile Gallé, with the controlled stlye of Louis Majorelle and the geometric forms of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Josef Hoffmann.
The display places the movement within its historical context, engaging with late 19th and 20th-century philosophical debates and reflecting the influence of science and nature on design, as a precursor to abstraction.
The First Moderns features loans from public institutions such as the V&A and Glasgow School of Art, and a number of private collections. It is also a first chance to see acquisitions to the Sainsbury Centre collections of significant works by Josef Hoffmann and Alphonse Mucha.
The First Moderns: Art Nouveau, from Nature to Abstraction is curated by a team led by Professor Paul Greenhalgh.

Bill Viola: Norfolk & Norwich Festival
The Sainsbury Centre, in partnership with the Norwich & Norfolk Festival, is bringing together an exhibition of video installations by international artist Bill Viola, to be shown around at venues around the city.
Bill Viola has been instrumental in the establishment of video as an essential medium of contemporary art practice. His work looks at the universal human experiences of birth, death and the unfolding of consciousness, creating total environments with sound and visuals that surround the viewer. With roots in both eastern and western art, it takes inspiration from spiritual traditions including Zen Buddhism, Sufism and Christian mysticism.
The video installations, which have never been shown before in East Anglia, will be exhibited in a selection of venues including the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and the Undercroft at City Hall.
Presented in partnership with Norwich & Norfolk Festival (11 – 26 May).
