Henry VIII granted this beautiful timber-framed house to his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, as part of her divorce settlement. Let your imagination take you back to the 16th century as you wander through the kitchen or gaze at the rafters in the high roof of the hall. Round off your visit with a stroll in the delightful garden to appreciate the scent of roses and herbs.

The Lewes Gallery tells the story of Lewes from the fifteenth century to modern times, the role of local resident Tom Paine, Lewes bonfire night traditions and the story of the Snowdrop Inn. Another gallery illustrates the important Wealden iron industry.

Living in a Tudor House

This session takes place in the bedroom. The group explores the building materials including a hands on activity fitting wooden joints together. The session then looks at the furniture and children are given the opportunity to make a drawing to take away with quills.
This activity can be adapted for KS1 to include a story based on the Princess and the Pea text.

How to obtain

We teach in groups of approximately 15 students up to a maximum of 45. Each session is usually one hour although the timetable is flexible. Services for schools at Anne of Cleves House

Anne of Cleves House is a timber-framed house dating from the 15th century. There is also a local history museum and herb garden on the site.
The education team offers activities that include artefact handling, drama, craft and storytelling to support Foundation Stage, KS1, 2 and 3 curricula.
