Kettle's Yard is a house with a permanent collection of 20th century art and a gallery showing a changing programme of 20th century and contemporary art exhibitoins.

Kettle's Yard House was created by Jim Ede, once a curator at the Tate Gallery. It is more than an art collection, the building and the way in which the art and other objects are displayed are unique. In many ways Kettle's Yard House retains the characteristics of a real home and visitors are welcome to sit in the chairs, read the books and enjoy the art works.

Kettle's Yard Gallery enjoys an internatonal reputation for its innovative exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. A wide variety of exhibiton are shown every year including major retrospectives of modern artists as well as first UK showings by contemporary international artists.

In the Kettle's Yard House there is a collection of 20th century art including paintings by Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Christopher Wood, ALfred Wallis and David Jones and sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. This Spring sees the return of the first ever Kettle’s Yard Artist Fellow, Tim Head, whose dazzling digital works and drawings will be on display.
In Head’s screen works and large-scale digital projections we see colours flash and flicker at varying speeds in dazzling, pulsating formations. Head has created computer programs that speak directly to projectors and printers, revealing the underlying material elements of the digital medium.

Kettle’s Yard welcomes Summer with the quiet but shimmering paintings of Agnes Martin.
‘My interest is in experience that is wordless and silent, and in the fact that this experience can be expressed for me in art which is also wordless and silent.’
Without objects or forms, Agnes Martin suggested we approach her paintings ‘as you would cross an empty beach to look at the ocean.’ Often linked to Minimalism, she maintained that her paintings are concerned with the inner emotional world - our search for a perfection which is impossible to achieve - and the desire for contentment and serenity. Leading scholars including Professor Briony Fer (University College London) and Professor Jonathan Katz (State University of New York) will present new research and lead discussion about Agnes Martin’s work. The day will Include an examination of her links to other women artists of the time and of the part her lesbian sexuality may have played in her particular development of abstract painting.
