From Hollywood to Highbury: Islington goes to the movies

10 May — 23 August 2013 *on now

Islington was one of the first areas of the country to embrace the new medium of cinema and the moving pictures.

This north London borough was the birthplace of acknowledged ‘Father of British Cinema’, Robert William Paul (1869-1943), it presented the first sound-film show and was, possibly, the home of the Britain’s first dedicated cinema. The area also made ‘movies’. In 1919 Islington Film Studios became the main British base of the giant American film industry and, in 1936, Highbury Studios emerged, offering services as an independent alternative to its larger neighbour.

'From Hollywood to Highbury' explores Islington's cinematic past and present. From Robert Paul to the Vue Cinema, by way of the locality’s sound-stages and film-sets, it is a story of endeavour, technology, ‘palaces’ and ‘flea-pits’ and glitz and glamour. So, with popcorn at the ready, sit back as the lights go down and take a trip with us down movie memory lane!
