Hillingdon Local Studies, Archives and Museum Service exists to:
take care of the Borough's collections of historic material,
help local people find out about their heritage,
promote responsible care for all historic items, old and new,
and work for the establishment of a Borough Museum in Hillingdon.

The Service is Hillingdon's museum and records service. The Heritage collections relate to the natural and human history of the Hillingdon area. They cover the disciplines below.

Museum: The museum collection includes topographical prints, archaeology as well as local and social history items.

The museum collection is currently in store, but temporary exhibitions are regularly organised in our display area in the Central Library in Uxbridge and other venues.

Local Studies And Archive: Material in this part of the collection includes books, pamphlets, periodicals, newspapers, maps, deeds, manuscripts, leaflets and microfilms.

The main collection is based at the Local studies Library on Level 6 at the Central Library, Uxbridge and specialist staff are available during the opening hours of this room. Anyone wishing to consult any archival material is advised to make an appointment in advance.

Staff offer support for work in schools in a variety of ways.

Other activities include workshops for children, families and adults of all ages, development of resources and teaching materials. We also have a collection of artefacts and other materials which are used for handling.

The services that we offer include talks, identification of objects (we are not able to do valuations), help with exhibition work for groups and individuals, advice on the care and conservation of objects, documents and pictures.

We have a large collection of historic photographs showing locations across the borough.

We will remember them

  • 5 December 2014 7-10pm

Tanya Britton has spent the last 20 years researching the men of Hillingdon who died in the Great War, and many of those who served and survived. She has recently published this research in a series of sixteen books, each focussed on a specific village or town in the Hillingdon area. This talk looks at how she undertook her research and some of the stories uncovered. We hope that Tanya will be there to answer questions.
