Haslemere Educational Museum







An award winning Museum in the heart of Haslemere with remarkable collections of natural history, human history and geology. Founded in 1888 by the renowned London physician Sir Jonathan Hutchinson, the galleries display a fine array of minerals and fossils, magnificent specimens from the animal kingdom as well as plants and insects and interesting artefacts from all the key British historical periods. Journey through time and marvel at a 500 million year old fossil, meet Arthur the Siberian brown bear and see an Egyptian Mummy!
The Museum offers a lively programme of events and exhibitions throughout the year and has a wonderful tradition of learning for all ages.
Set in beautiful historic grounds, which include an observation beehive, pond and gazebo, the Museum has been inspiring visitors for more than one hundred years.
The Museum is a member of the First World War Centenary Partnership, a network of organisations committed to the delivery of the First World War Centenary Programme: a global programme of events and activities inspiring young and old to remember the impact of the First World War on people and society today.

Plant Sale at Haslemere Museum

Haslemere Museum’s annual Plant Sale promises a fabulous selection of bedding, vegetable and perennial plants, some very unusual, all at very reasonable prices. May Half Term at Haslemere Museum

There’s plenty of activities for all the family this May half-term at Haslemere Museum.
Museum Explorers takes place on Tuesday 29 May where young visitors can discover more about the amazing wildlife that lives in the Museum’s beautiful spring fed pond. On Saturday 2 June where not come along and enjoy a morning of rockets to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the first manned flight of a rocket powered aircraft. The sessions run from 10.30am – 12pm and are suitable for children aged 5-11 years – parents do not need to stay. (booking advisable).
Early Birds takes place on Wednesday 30 May. A friendly morning session enabling families with children who have an Autism Spectrum Condition to enjoy the Museum free from the hustle and bustle of the public. The Museum will open early at 9am until 10am and families can explore the galleries at their own pace and in a calm, relaxed environment. There will also be the opportunity to handle special objects too.
Don’t miss the family drop in event on Thursday 31 May when Mill Cottage Farm comes to the Museum! There will be a selection of very friendly farm animals to feed, groom and stroke in the Museum's beautiful gardens. There will also be a range of arts and crafts activities too. The event runs from 11.00am to 3pm so why not bring a picnic and stay for lunch!
The galleries are full of interactive fun too including quizzes, puzzles and dressing up available every day as well as backpacks offering a variety of activities for children to do whilst exploring the galleries. Look out for the half term gallery trail too!

Outdoor Theatre at Haslemere Museum - The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company

The beautiful grounds of the Museum provide the perfect setting for outdoor theatre events this summer, so why not grab a picnic and head to the lawns of the Museum and enjoy a highly entertaining evening. The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company, who specialise in iconic outdoor theatre, will be returning to the Museum this year, with a new play - 'Oberon's Cure' - a beautiful poetic play where the human and fairy worlds collide in this hilarious prequel to 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Ancient Egyptian beliefs about life after death (KS2)
Award winning ( 2004/2005 'Interpret Surrey Award)workshop.Hands-on event, explores mummification and Ancient Egyptian beliefs. Uses the whole range of interpretive tools available:- role-play, handling, museum's Egyptian display (featuring Pa-Er-Abu, a mummified priest) and written resources. Must be pre-booked

Creepy Crawlies
A workshop on how to identify the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates, how to find invertebrate mini-beasts and bugs. Uses the museum's observation beehive and grounds(when dry - Natural History Gallery when wet). Finding and identifying live specimens from the 'Mini-beast Mountain' and the Meadow. Can be booked according to school's date requirements(subject to staff availability). Cost:£2.00/£2.50

Gallery Visit (Pre-school, KS1 and KS2)

Multi-themed museum activities including learning about nature, art and craft, hands-on learning and much more. Sessions take place on the 1st Saturday of the month and during school holidays and are suitable for children aged 5-11 years.

Relic: Guardians of the Museum
Following on from the successful CBBC programme Haslemere Museum id pleased to announce its own Relic trail for families and young people. Find the five objects and complete the associated challenge.
Skeletons and Muscles
Workshop involving hands-on activities such as making joints and using the museum's replica human skeleton. Visit to the museum's Natural History Gallery to look at skeletal adaptations in other animals. Bookable according to school's requirements(subject to staff availability). Cost: £2.50/£3.00.

Toys from the Past
Workshop investigating the similarities and differences between modern and historical toys - looks at materials and uses. Children are able to handle and try out replica toys from the education collection and will be encouraged to make close observations of the museum's collection in the History Gallery. Can be booked (subject to staff availability) according to school's date requirements. Cost: £2.00/£2.50.
