The newly refurbished Hertford Museum opened in February 2010, thanks to the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and many other kind donations. It was established in 1903 and is located in a 17th century town house with an attractive Jacobean style garden.

The displays on the ground floor tell the story of the early days of the museum, where objects from all over the world where collected, including exotic animals, Japanese armour and fossils. The whole of the first floor of the museum is dedicated to telling the story of the town and the townsfolk. A ring of Hertford faces shows Hertford’s famous and good. Visitors can find out about these people by dialling an old phone.

Find out all about childhood in Hertford, free time, health and wellbeing, shopping and the many industries that have shaped the town. See how big Hertford Castle really was with our model of the building in 1550. Find out all about the Hertfordshire Regiment and the stories of local men and women who fought and worked for their country.

On the first Saturday of each month, The Andrews Room at Hertford Museum will be open for families to enjoy a free play session. Come along and play with traditional wooden toys, make something crafty and read a book. Whilst you are here why not use the discovery station toys to explore the galleries too?

Museums at Night

Live bands at Hertford Museum

Join us for a special free evening opening to celebrate the Museums at Night festival! Enjoy a drink from our pay bar, listen to live music from local bands, and explore our galleries and displays.

Drop in for a feast of sound and vision! Stop motion animation from artist Sarah Evans, accompanied by musical improvisation from The McKenzie Break, plus Julian House, co founder of Ghost Box Records, will also provide exciting sights and sounds.

There will be two performances by each artist over the course of the evening, with performance times to be announced on the night.

Our collections include archaeology, ephemera, ethnography, fine art, geology, Hertfordshire Regiment, natural history, photographs and social history. We also hold the Addis company archive, including the largest collection of toothbrushes in the UK!
