The museum was founded by Princess Beatrice in 1898 in memory of her husband, Henry, as a museum of Isle of Wight history. It is an independent charitable trust which occupies the former great hall and Governor's residence with Carisbrooke Castle. Displays include the history of Carisbrooke Castle and local history.
