Burwell Museum & Windmill










A museum (reg.charity No.290431), run by un-paid volunteers and 2 part-time paid staff, depicting village life on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens from the Saxons to the 60's. The displays are housed in various attractive buildings including an 18th Century timber framed barn.
Stevens' Mill, a Grade II* Listed windmill next to the museum site, is part of the museum and is fully restored thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and several other donations. Visitors can tour inside with one of our Mill Guides for a small additional charge.

Wheelchair access to ground floor public areas. Stair-lifts available for access to all upstairs public areas, except the windmill.
Coaches are welcome, but by prior arrangement only, please.
Shop/Tea Room sells souvenirs, books, CD-ROMs and light refreshments (hot & cold drinks, confectionery, snack food, cake) Range of food is expanded on Event days.
Refreshments/cold food (e.g. Ploughmans Lunch) can be provided for pre-booked groups.

Rollin' Classic Cars at Burwell Museum

Roll back the years and join us for a friendly classic car show including a brilliant display of vintage tractors. See fabulous vintage cars including a 1907 Holsman and Austin 7, enjoy an afternoon tea or BBQ and dance the afternoon away to classic Rock ‘n’ Roll tunes.

National Mills Open Weekend

Help us to meet our challenge of welcoming 500 visitors in a weekend!
Free entry to Stevens' Mill and the museum all weekend.
Tour Burwell’s only remaining windmill, meet the Miller and find out more about the “Mill for All Seasons” project, a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project to fit new millstones and eventually run them using a tractor rather than the wind.
At the museum, enjoy stalls, live performances and home-made cake.
Milling subject to suitable weather conditions. Donations welcome – all proceeds will go towards funding a better access path to the windmill.

Burwell Babble: A Mill for All Seasons

Getting there
Burwell is on the B1102 road about 12 miles north east of Cambridge, 12 miles south of Ely and 4 miles north west of Newmarket.
Museum car parking (free) is signed in the village High Street (at the Gardiner Memorial Hall). Museum is a short walk from rear left of car park. Disabled drivers may park in Mill Close near the museum entrance.
