Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Days: Flora Twort Gallery

  • 12 September 2015

The Flora Twort Gallery houses the work of Flora Twort, an artist inspired by the local area and its people. A fantastic range of sketches, watercolours and prints can be viewed. This year's display, A Little Town and some of its People, is named after the artist's first one-woman show, held at the Gieves Gallery in London in 1931. As well as displaying some of her work from that show, the exhibition will look at Flora Twort's relationship with Petersfield and its residents through some of her other work in a variety of media.

The gallery also exhibits the Bedales costume collection, which consists of pieces dating from the 1700s. A selection of our collections are shown each year and changed annually. This year we will have a collection of 19th century pieces on display in a collection of Victorian Delights. Through examples of men's, women's and children's clothing, we look at changing styles and influences throughout the Victorian era.

The Flora Twort Gallery also hosts a regularly changing programme of exhibitions in our Community Gallery from jewellery to watercolours and textiles.

A series of interactives and quizzes make the gallery ideal for families.

Curator, Dr Kathrin Pieren, will lead a talk at 2pm about the museum's historic dress collection.
