The Beaney is an art museum and library situated in the heart of the historic city of Canterbury.
Venue Type:
Museum, Gallery, Library
The Canterbury Jewellers Festival
Jewellers have been working in Canterbury for nearly 2,000 years and the cathedral is also home to the Patron Saint of gold and silversmiths, St Dunstan who was buried there at the end of the 10th century.
To mark this longstanding craft in the city we are celebrating four of our outstanding contemporary desinger/makers with a 10 day festival showcasing their skills: Ortwin Thyssen, Justin Richardson, Luke Goldsmith and Polly Gasston.
Each jeweller will highlight a particular piece or aspect of their craftmanship and there will be daily two-hour demonstrations of what they do and how they do it, with many skills and techniques unchanged for millennia.
Cantebrury City Partnership has been spearheading the festival which is being sponsored by the Goldsmiths Company in London and the Canterbury Index magazine. And to top it all off there will be a display all about St Dunstan. Who was he? Why was he important? And how did he become the Patron Saint of gold and silversmiths in the first place? (Demonstrations will take place between 2 and 4pm daily, except Sunday 19 and 26 May, and numbers may be limited depending on demand).

Eclipse
Silhouette images of local plant forms by artist Edward Chell. The lacquered gesso panels provide classifications of species thriving in Kent woodland, such as the Blean and King's Wood, as well as roadside vegetation.
Supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and organised in partnership with Stour Valley Arts. On view from the Summer Solstice, Edward Chell's images connect to a wider set of values associated with silhouettes and shadows: presence and absence, light and photgraphy, and Linnaean systems of shape often used in guide books.
