Dive in to maritime history and explore the town. The fascinating displays give townspeople and visitors an idea of why Whitstable is here, how it grew and how it has changed over the years. Its unique seafaring history is explored, incuding oyster fishing, diving and shipbuilding.

Discover local stories of seaside, floods, the world's first passenger steam railway, shopping, industries, newspaper cartoon characters Pip, Squeak and Wilfred, and memorabilia of famous resident Peter Cushing.

See the big red fire engine, sit at a Victorian school desk and hunt for fossil sharks teeth!

Changing exhibitions on varied themes plus regular events. Special activities for schools and groups.

Peter Cushing at 100!

A celebration of the 100th birthday of Whitstable's most famous resident in images and objects from collectors across the UK and beyond. Find out more about the actor at home, including his paintings and memories of him contributed by Whitstable people. Linked special events in the town.

Visit Britain: images from the Shell Advertising Art Collection

6 July — 22 September 2013

From the 1920's, the Shell oil and petrol company took the British coast and countryside as inspiration for one of its most effective advertising campaigns, and commissioned many famous names in contemporary art to produce illustrations for posters in a wide variety of artistic styles.

The exhibition inlcudes posters and original artwork alongside spoken memories of seaside holidays from the Museum's oral history collection. A Whitstable Oyster Festival exhibition.
