The REME Museum tells the history of the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. The Corps was formed in 1942 and still undertaking its original function of keeping the army's machines and weapons fitting fit.

Getting there

The museum is located next to MoD Lyneham just off Calne Road (A3102). Approximately 5 miles South West from Royal Wotton Bassett.

The museum has a shop and cafe which serves light lunches in the week. A large free car park with disabled parking is also available.

The museum collection shows military technological development as used by the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in maintaining and repairing the Army's equipment since 1942. The Corps of REME is responsible for recovering, repairing and maintaining the equipment of the British Army. This includes their vehicles (armed and unarmed), aircraft, radar, control and firing equipment, optics, medical and dental, electronics and diagnostic testing equipment.

Exhibits contrast the vehicles of 1942 with todays equivalent,i.e.the Scammell Pioneer and the Challenger Armoured Recovery Vehicle. The REME medals collection illustrate REME trademens skills in the field and their gallantry. The uniforms, models and dioramas, radar, telecommunications and weapons show the developing trades and training of REME craftsmen. The Corps Documentary, Technical and Pictorial Archives cover all areas of REME life and work and are available to researchers by booking in advance. Reserve collections are available by booking in advance.

REME Museum Summer Fete

Kids of all ages can enjoy a fun day with the soldiers of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as the Corps’ Museum hosts its annual Summer Fete.

The event, being held at REME Museum, Lyneham on 21st July, will feature family-friendly events including a kids’ assault course, mine field challenge, kids’ golf and treasure hunting – as well as a military book stall, craft activities, a raffle, BBQ and other activities.

The event, being held in and around the Museum, is raising funds for the REME Charity which supports serving and retired members of the Corps. As well as enjoying the games and activities, guests will discover more about the fascinating history and role of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the Museum.

Tickets are available to book in advance or on the day at £7 for Adults, £5 for concessions and children and £4 for serving soldiers. Family tickets are available at £21, with free entry for under-5s and REME Gold Card members and their families.
