Thetford's Ancient House has recently benefitted from a £1.6 million renovation, which has gone towards conserving the Grade I listed Tudor merchant's house and creating up-to-date displays.

The atmospheric crooked house tells the remarkable story of Thetford and the Brecks. Discover rich collections alongside audio guides, films and animations.

Meet local people from Thetford's past, from the revolutionary philosopher Thomas Paine to the Sikh hero Maharajah Duleep Singh and from rabbit warreners to railway workers.

Take time out in the re-planted garden and don't miss the brand new museum shop in its oak pavilion. Allow about an hour and a half for a visit.

Thetford and the First World War

  • 1 December 2014 — 31 October 2015 *on now

The ‘Thetford and the First World War’ exhibition at Ancient House forms part of a town-wide ‘Thetford Remembers’ commemoration of the Great War, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

At the Museum you can see a figure in the old kitchen made by sculptor Do Phillips to represent Leonard Newton, a casualty of the war who once called Ancient House his home. Leonard was recorded in the official census of 1901 as living in the house with his family and their lodgers. He was a six-year-old boy at the time. He joined the army in 1914 and was killed at Ypres in 1915. His name appears on the war memorial on the Market Place in Thetford. Museum staff recently found out that Private Newton is remembered at the Hooge Crater Museum at Ypres with a display of is cap badge and memorial plaque.

Normal admission charges apply.
