Robert Gillmor: Retrospective

23 October 2011 — 29 April 2012 *on now

Internationally acclaimed wildlife artist and bird expert Robert Gillmor returns to his native Reading for the first large scale retrospective of his work in 30 years.

Robert is well known for his masterful lino cut prints. They result from thousands of hours spent observing birds plus an exquisite sense of colour and superb draughtsmanship. They perfectly capture the subjects’ essence – what ornithologists call ‘the jizz’ – ensuring that there will be plenty for wildlife enthusiasts and art lovers to enjoy.

All the original lino cut prints for Robert’s recent Royal Mail stamp series will be on show as will commissions as varied as humorous greetings cards and conservation posters. He has contributed illustrations to more than one hundred books and this aspect of his work will be represented by watercolours, line drawings and preparatory sketches.

A full programme of activities for adults and children will accompany the exhibition, including ‘An evening with Robert Gillmor and friends’.

2 June 2012

Britain's full-size copy of the famous Bayeux Tapestry is displayed in its magnificent entirety in this purpose-built gallery.

This faithful replica is 70 metres long. It was made by 35 skilled Victorian women embroiderers in 1885 so that Britain should have its own copy of the tapestry. We have a page on this site and an entire separate site dedicated to Britain's Bayeux Tapestry. For more information please follow the links below.

The gallery also explores the background and impact of the Norman Conquest of 1066, including the history of Saxon migration and Viking raids on the Reading area over the preceding 400 years.
