A visit to Colchester Castle Museum takes you through 2000 years of some of the most important events in British history. Once capital of Roman Britain, Colchester has experienced devastation by Boudica (Boadicea), invasion by the Normans and siege during the English Civil War.

Since the 16th century, the Castle has been a ruin, a library and a gaol for witches. Today it is an award winning museum featuring many hands-on displays showing Colchester's history from the Stone Age to the Civil War.

This museum has a Designated Collection of national importance.

The archaeology collections of Colchester Museums are Designated Collections of national importance.

Among the many objects to note are the famous "Colchester Vase" and the tombstone of the Roman Centurian Marcus Favonius Facilis. The extensive archaeology collections are of superb quality and reflect the central role played by Colchester at the start of Britain's recorded history. The Timeless Mosaic

Contribute to our mosaic whilst making your own souvenir piece to take home. A different era each day will make a mosaic spanning the centuries by the end of the week.

Christmas Open Evening and Market

A chance to hear music and carols, meet Santa and enjoy the festive atmosphere. A market will take place around the outside of the castle where you can pick up some great gifts and munch on hot food and drink.

Battle through the ages!

From Romans to the present day this fun-packed day shows how warfare has changed over the last 2000 years. You will also get a chance to shoot arrows and take part in other fun activities, with re-enactors and military vehicles.

Attractions in the park are free. Small charge for archery. Activities and attractions in the castle are subject to normal castle entry charge.
