Valence House is a Medieval and later timber-framed and partially moated building situated in parkland. Its collection covers all aspects of the historic life and environment of the old Essex parishes of Barking and Dagenham. Valence House reopened in June 2010 following extensive refurbishment which included entirely new displays and provision of a lift giving disabled access to part of the first floor.
A herb garden was laid out to one side of the house in the 1990s. A new Visitor Centre contains the Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre, cafe, shop and education and function rooms.
There is wheelchair access to the ground floor and part of the first floor of Valence House itself. The grounds and Visitor Centre, including the Archives and Local Studies Centre, are fully accessible.
