Over 12,000 works of art make up the collections of UCL Art Museum, from the 1500s to the present day.

Works separated by centuries are linked by a desire to experiment with new materials, theories, and reproduction techniques in order to produce new meanings, share ideas and inspire.

The experimental spirit is present in early printmaking techniques as used by Dürer, studio model books employed in Renaissance artists’ workshops, Neo-classical plaster modelling and pointing machines, the study of the human figure in the life room, Japanese colour woodblocks, screenprinting popular in the 1960s, early computer art of the 1970s and contemporary digital media.

The College Art Collections contains over 10,000 objects including paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture from 1490 - present. Founded in 1847 when sculpture models by the neo-classical artist John Flaxman were given to UCL. These are on display in the Flaxman Gallery and the Strang Print Room. Other areas of the collection: English C18th and C19th prints and drawings, Northern European Renaissance and Baroque prints and drawings, Slade School of Art student work 1895 - present.

Prize & Prejudice

Prize & Prejudice

Prize & Prejudice is an exhibition and series of programmes dedicated to artistic ambition, struggles and successes of artists emerging from the Slade School of Fine Art during its foundation years. It explores the experience of prize-winning artists, mostly women, now largely forgotten due to prejudice and circumstance.

The Woman Citizen

Historically, women have taken control of the way they are represented by publishing on their own terms. Join artists, writers and publishers to explore how female-led independent publishing, from zines to subverted magazines and art books, is setting new standards for more progressive media.

Sarah Pucil, Detail of Confessions to the Mirror

Confessions to the Mirror

Taking its title from the French Surrealist artist, Claude Cahun’s incomplete memoir (Confidences au miroir, 1945-1954), Confessions to the Mirror animates re-stagings of Cahun’s black and white self-portrait and still–life photographs with voices from her text, collaging and transposing both photographs and words with colour and sound.  The film traces Cahun’s early and later life with her partner Suzanne Malherbe, their political propaganda activity and imprisonment on Jersey Island during the Nazi occupation. The tracing of a life is made conscious through tableaux vivants that project images of the couple’s home from the photographs into a domestic contemporary setting.


Following the screening, Sarah Pucill will be in conversation with art historian Maria Walsh.

Refreshments will be provided.

This screening of Confessions to the Mirror is part of the Prize & Prejudice programmes.

Instruction and Influence: Women in Art Education

This study day in partnership with the Women’s Library at the London School of Economics and Political Science examines ways in which the position of women in British art education has changed since the first women were admitted to the Slade School of Fine Art on equal terms to men just over a hundred years ago, looking at issues of gender equality, work-life balance, professional development, networks of influence and values within higher education in British art. Supported by the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art.
