Built in 1504 and steeped in history, St John’s Gate was the entrance to the Priory of the Order of St John, the English Headquarters of the crusading Knights Hospitallers, from 1140 until Henry VIII’s reign. It is now the headquarters of the Venerable Order of St John (a British Royal Order of Chivalry, founded in the nineteenth century) and was the birthplace of its two charities, St John Ambulance and the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.

The Museum galleries explore the history of the Hospitallers and of the Venerable Order and its foundations, including a touch screen multimedia gallery, 'Time to Care' , which tells the story of St John Ambulance, from 1877 to the present day.

Visitors can also join guided tours (on Tuesdays, Friday and Saturdays at 11 and 2.30) of the Gate and Grand Priory Church and its 12th Century Crypt.

Caring on the Home Front

http://www.caringonthehomefront.org.uk/

The Caring on the Home Front website is a unique historical and social record of the period 1939-1945.
It is based on oral history interviews with Home Front volunteers who served in the Joint War Organisation (JWO), a partnership between the British Red Cross and St. John Ambulance.
The website uses images from the collections of both organisations' museums. Teachers will find a number of video and audio clips available for you to download and use to support your teaching. You will also find a collection of other useful resources to help you bring your History and Citizenship lessons alive.
