This museum's wide-ranging collections, including vehicles, posters, uniforms, photographs, film, architectural fragments, engineering drawings and oral testimonies are all Designated Collections of national importance. The wealth of material is used to great effect to chart the development of the first public transport system in a major city.

Of special significance amongst the vehicle collection is a locomotive and carriage from the City and South London Railway of 1890, the first underground electric railway in the world. The reserve collections are now accessible to the public at the Depot, the Museum's open-access store, whilst more information about the collections continues to be made available through the Museum's website and electronic databases.

Poster Art 150

15 February — 27 October 2013 *on now

A new blockbuster exhibition Poster Art 150 – London Underground’s Greatest Designs, will showcase 150 of the greatest Underground posters ever produced and opens at London Transport Museum on Friday 15 February 2013. Supported by Siemens, and forming part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the London Underground, the exhibition will feature posters by many famous artists including Edward McKnight Kauffer and Paul Nash, and designs from each decade over the last 100 years.
The posters were selected from the Museum’s archive of over 3,300 Underground posters by a panel of experts; the 150 that will appear in the exhibition show the range and depth of the Museum’s collection. Visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite poster in the gallery and also online in The Siemens Poster Vote. The most popular poster will be revealed at the end of the exhibition.
