The Design Museum is one of the world’s leading museums of modern and contemporary design. Since its foundation in 1989, the museum has become the cultural champion of UK design and won international acclaim for exhibitions of modern design history and contemporary design innovation. This stylish museum has a regularly changing exhibition programme covering a wide range of themes from product and graphic design, fashion, furniture, architecture and engineering. In addition to fascinating exhibitions the museum also has a riverside café serving sandwiches, salads and cakes by Konditor and Cook and offers spectacular views of the Thames and Tower Bridge. The Design Museum Shop stocks a comprehensive range of design-led products and books from design classics to the latest innovations.

Designers in Residence

The Design Museum’s annual Designers in Residence programme provides
a platform to celebrate emerging designers at an early stage in
their career.

Now in its seventh year, Designers in Residence is a core part of the exhibition calendar, demonstrating the Design Museum’s commitment to support and encourage new design talent. Recent alumni have included Giles Miller, Asif Khan, Bethan Laura Wood and Simon Hasan.

The programme offers the designers the opportunity to interact and engage with the design and business community, using this platform to test-bed ideas, innovations and future projects.

Women, Fashion, Power

  • 29 October 2014 — 31 May 2015

A major exhibition exploring the politics of dressing for power and success. The show presents exceptional women on the world stage and their wardrobes, to show how fashion can be used as a powerful tool to build reputation, enhance careers and express modernity. Women that see clothes not as a frivolous indulgence, but as an important way to attract attention, announce presence, assert authority and guarantee notoriety.

The exhibition will features contemporary women working in politics, business, the creative arts and fashion from around the world, as well as looking back at influential women through history. Archive footage, interviews and photographs reveals each woman’s love of fashion, their favourite designers and stand out fashion moments. The exhibition is co-curated by Colin McDowell, one of the fashion industry’s most respected commentators, and Donna Loveday, Head of Curatorial at the Design Museum.

OPTIMUM CREATIVITY WORKSHOPS

Devised to maximise students’ creative skills, these innovative workshops mirror and explore the design process as used by design industry professionals and can be classified as ‘Work Related Learning’ for students studying on the new Creative and Media Diploma.

Secondary/ FE Workshops - Product Evaluation

Aimed at Key Stage 4 and AS/A2 level students, our Secondary Product Evaluation Workshops can also be modified for students at Key Stage 3. Based on a unique product handling collection, each workshop is a one hour hands-on session, combining observation, product handling, drawing, discussion and problem-solving.

Sunday Workshops

Come along to the Design Museum on Sundays at 14.00 for creative workshops inspired by the collection and exhibitions. Workshops are suitable for children aged 5-11 years and take place in the Design Museum Space.

How to obtain

Booking is essential for these very popular workshops. Once you've booked, turn up 15 minutes prior to start time. Price for children per session is £4 and £8.50 per accompanying adult.
