Blasts from the Past Exhibition

Blasts from the Past exhibition

  • 19 April 2016 — 15 April 2017 *on now

‘Blasts from the past’, is a Museum of Croydon, Croydon NOW exhibition, celebrating 21 years of exhibitions at Croydon Clocktower.

Between 1995 and 2011, Croydon Clocktower’s Exhibition Gallery hosted 38 major exhibitions. Three exhibitions were held each year and were visited by a total of nearly 350,000 people. 'Blasts from the past' will use objects, archive collections, ephemera and people’s memories to recreate this contribution to Croydon’s cultural scene.
The first exhibition in the newly opened cultural venue was ‘Cock and Bull Stories: A Picasso Bestiary’ which opened on 3 March 1995. It was visited by 26,739 people in its 10 week run and proved to be the most visited exhibition at the Clocktower

Petherick Family Album

Petherick Family Album

  • 8 November 2016 — 15 April 2017 *on now

The Petherick's were prominent members of Croydon's cultural scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with connections to the Croydon String Players and the Coleridge Taylor family.

Horace William Petherick was an artist, published author and violin repairer. He and his wife Clementina Augusta had seven children, the first two, Horace Claude and Adeline Maud, died in early childhood. The remaining five, all daughters, went on to become artists and musicians.

Within the Croydon Art collection there are 67 works by Horace, Rosa and Leila some of which can be seen on display. Additionally, our collections include a family album which contains illustrations and early sketches by Rosa, Leila, Ada, Eveline and Dora. These illustrations also give a sense of the progression of the sisters from childhood to adulthood, particularly focusing on Rosa who later became a children's illustrator.

The exhibition is the first at the Museum of Croydon to display Horace, Rosa and Leila's works together along with illustrations from the family album.
