Outside in Exhibition

Outside In

29 March — 31 May 2013 *on now

A selection of works from ‘Outside In: National’, a ground breaking exhibition showcasing work by artists from the margins will be on display in our temporary exhibition galleries in Abbot’s Hall.

The Outside In project was set up in 2006 by Pallant House Gallery to provide opportunities for artists who see themselves as facing a barrier to the art world. The goal of the project is to create a fairer art world which rejects traditional values and institutional judgements about whose work can and should be displayed.

Described as offering a “radical perspective on Britain today” by Jonathan Jones of The Guardian, ‘Outside In: National’ provides a unique insight into the extraordinary breadth and vitality of work produced by individuals from outside the mainstream art world.

Quilts

Quilts: Textile Treasures from Wales

5 June — 25 August 2013

Textile enthusiasts are in for a big treat this summer as the Museum of East Anglian Life presents a unique selection of Welsh quilts from the Ceredigion Museum in Aberystwyth.

Recognisingthe harsh existence for farmers, miners and seafarers in mid Wales during the 19th and early 20th centuries, handmade quilts provided comfort and warmth amidst sparsely furnished dwellings.

The exhibition follows the winding path of economics through the use of scraps of old cloth, tailors samples and much repaired or patched quilts, compared to specially purchased colourful satins and silks. Each of these fabrics was used to produce visually stunning patchwork covers.

Most of the quilts have personal stories attached to their making. Not only are they technically interesting but they are also historically fascinating. Quilt making is usually a social activity bringing people together and giving the makers a chance to share time together.

Recreated room in Crowe Street Cottages

Crowe Street Cottage Tours

The cottages are a pair of newly restored estate workers cottages dating back from 18th century. Their last occupant, Emily Wilding ran a dairy from the rear of the building and donated all her belongings to the museum when she vacated the cottages in the early 1970s. We offer guided tours twice daily for visitors to look inside, providing a unique snapshot of the life of a mid 20th century rural worker and their family.

How to obtain

A guided tour of Crowe Street Cottages is available between 11.00am-11.45am and 2.30pm-3.15pm and can be booked at the front desk upon arrival. Crowe Street tours are covered by normal Museum entry.
