Horniman Walrus visit to Sagrada Familia Barcelona wins prize for photographers

By Culture24 Reporter | 18 September 2013

Two south London schoolgirls who took a dupe of the Horniman’s famous walrus to Barcelona have won a globetrotting competition inviting exotic photoshoots featuring the stuffed sea creature.

Josie and Maggie Horneff took a toy version of the walrus, gifted to them by their aunt, Sara, to the Sagrada Familia cathedral in the Catalan capital. They then created a panoramic shot of 11 walruses at the Tarragona amphitheatre.

“It was great fun being with Wilba the Walrus in Spain,” said Josie.

“He loved Barcelona and the beach. His favourite ice cream was Oreo-flavoured.

“We really miss the walrus at the museum and can't wait for him to come home.”

The real thing is currently on loan at the Turner Contemporary in Margate, leading to a competition which has seen toy walruses travel more than 35,000 miles, according to keepers at the Horniman.

“The wandering walruses have been snapped as far afield as Alaska and Guam, as well as enjoying plenty of staycations here in the UK,” says Adrian Murphy, of the museum, praising the “great fun photo”.

“We liked Josie and Maggie’s image because, like our own walrus, the Sagrada Familia is a graceful, soaring construction.”

Finalists included a “walrus in the mist” at a Somerset stone circle, a portrait taken at Belgrade Cathedral of Salva during a motorbike tour of Europe, an anonymous shot from a walrus’s meeting with Pacific Ocean islanders and a blog dedicated to the travelling Horace Walrus.

They will be united when the one-ton, over-stuffed original walrus returns to the Horniman tomorrow. Curators will move him onto an updated iceberg with new information panels before throwing a tea party.
