In the warm summer months, museums can offer a cool place to retreat from the heat. However, our British summers are so fleeting it’s sometimes with a little guilt that we head indoors. Mansfield Museum is attempting to avoid this by bringing some of the outdoors inside their walls.

TreeTops offers a surprising alternative for families wishing to enjoy the outdoors and cultural experiences this summer. Every year the museum aims to create displays that families can visit two or three times during the holidays.

The displays are aimed at all ages so that adults can take in as much (or little) information as they want, whilst the younger members of the family can keep busy with dedicated materials.

This year’s display offers an intriguing space to escape a hot day. Stepping through a green curtain, visitors will find themselves in a woodland glade, complete with bark-strewn floor, giant toadstools and even a fairy reading corner. Lights and sounds will emulate the feeling of being within a peaceful forest.

There are also opportunities to find out more about Britain’s native woodlands, their vegetation and animal life and their place in our imaginations. Tips on where to go to visit the real thing and a guide to local conservation groups will also be available.

For those feeling more active there are trails to complete and a whole range of craft activities to take part in. But if that sounds like too much hard work, then visitors can relax by dipping their toes in the ball-stream or explore hidey-holes and discover the wood’s (stuffed) inhabitants.
