Geology matters in the Black Country. It is after all how the region got its name. The thick seam of carboniferous rock that runs between Dudley, Wallsall and Wolverhampton resulted in the region becoming a rich source of coal, a hotbed of industry and a focus for the industrial revolution.

It also meant the region has been a Mecca for geologists for centuries with the collections of Dudley, Sandwell and Wolverhampton museum services together forming one of the largest geological holdings in England. Begin your exploration of it here.
