Acclaimed Medusozoa jellyfish hung at Horniman Museum and Gardens

By Culture24 Reporter | 11 July 2013

Brainless, heartless but beautiful, Oliver Hine's photo of a jellyfish, Medusozoa 2, almost won the photography competition accompanying the Art Fund Museum of the Year Prize.

Including it in the final ten, the judges praised the shot partly for capturing the seemingly untameable creative spirit of the Horniman Museum of Gardens, where it has gone on show near the aquarium the shot was taken at.

“I take my camera with me almost everywhere I go, so I had it with me when I visited the Horniman in April,” recalls Hine.

“My fiancée, Hanna, pointed out the competition to me, so I spent longer than normal taking photos whilst we were walking around.

“The aesthetic simplicity and beautiful lighting of the jellyfish in their tank immediately drew my eye.

“I find jellyfish interesting from a scientific respect in that they function without a brain, heart or many other major organs we cannot imagine doing without.

“I imagine this allows them to have a very peaceful and serene life.”

Organisers at the venue encourage visitors to take non-commercial photos around the museum, with a colourfully inspiring Flickr page reflecting some of the results.

Michael Cartwright, whose photo was taken at Preston Park Museum and Grounds in Stockton-on-Tees, was the overall winner of the Museum of the Year Photography Competition, decided by a public vote.
