Festival: Fossil Festival, Lyme Regis Beach and Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, Lyme Regis, April 29 – May 1 2011
Alternately referred to as a “living laboratory” by researchers, the dozens of sites of scientific interest among the landslides, beaches, lagoons, stacks and bays of Lyme Bay make it little short of paradise for a fossil-inspired, science-art festival.
Speakers from the Natural History Museum, the National Oceanography Centre, the British Antarctic Survey and a gauntlet of museums and universities descend on it for this coastal carnival of discovery, but it’s not all academic.
Cabaret, dancing and animatronic beasts take to the sand in between screenings of David Attenborough’s Blue Planet, fishing trips and seafood treats.
Dinosaur runways, DNA experiments on shark teeth and plenty of fossils also make this a Mayday treat to savour.
