Horniman Museum launches competition to find best holidaying walrus photography

By Culture24 Reporter | 02 August 2013

A competition based around the holidaying Horniman Walrus, the one-ton stuffed giant which is on loan to Kent from south London this summer, has been launched to encourage visitors to take toy versions on their travels.

Fans are being asked to send in photos of soft versions of the walrus, sold in the shop at the Horniman, in exotic and domestic surroundings. Vouchers and invites to a homecoming party, planned for the popular resident’s return to the Natural History Gallery in September, will be awarded to the best snaps.

“Who knows where the walruses will wander?” pondered Adrian Murphy, of the museum, calling on holidaymakers to “leave a little space in your suitcase for a stuffed walrus”.

“We’d love as many people as possible to join in.”

The real walrus is taking part in a major exhibition, Curiosity: Art and the Pleasures of Knowing, at the Turner Contemporary in Margate.

  • Photos can be tweeted to @hornimanmuseum, uploaded to Instagram or Flickr or emailed to web@horniman.ac.uk. All entries should be tagged #wanderingwalrus.
