Exhibition: Animal Stories, New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester, June 25 2011 – February 26 2012

Peppy the Polar Bear, the enormous figurehead of Leicester-based Fox’s Glacier Mints, is the well-known local star of this show, but global eclecticism is the theme of a display inspired by religion, folklore, myth, fiction and fairytales.

There are artworks by Frederic Lord Leighton and Albrecht Durer, Staffordshire dogs, coins, taxidermy and board games, split into sections on birds, critters, sea creatures, cattle and pets.

The accompanying programme of events augments the sense of adventure by letting reptiles, birds and mini-beasts take over the museum, which is also backing the worthy cause of a Save the Albatross campaign run by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Visitors are being encouraged to bring used stamps to the show to aid attempts to bolster the endangered species.

  • Open 10am-5pm (11am-5pm Sunday). Admission free.
