Wood Nymph sculpture aims to highlight the plight of the forests at Stirling Smith Art Gallery

A new sculpture has taken to the podium at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery highlighting the plight of the world’s forests.

The Wood Nymph has been created by George Wilson, a master craftsman from Larbert in Falkirk, from hundreds of wooden fragments.

George describes his sculpture as a “mythological creature” and a symbol of what he describes as the “last wild places”. He also says he created it as a protest against “the seemingly illimitable expanses of the great forests now being ravaged for the materials of consumerism…”

A prize is on offer for the most fitting name for the Wood Nymph. Entries can be made on paper, in the Smith, or by e-mail, with the heading I Name That Nymph to museum@smithartgallery.demon.co.uk
