A Mini which has been lifted by millions of people at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry's Xperiment gallery is on the move to make way for a £7million redevelopment.

Henry the Mini was the star of the Xperiment gallery when it opened in 1988, becoming the Museu's top visitor attraction as it attracted thousands of fans through the door every year.

Members of the public used a series of gears and levers to lift the iconic car, which was suspended on its side. It will return to the gallery in a new dedicated space on the first floor.

"Xperiment was our most popular gallery in the main building and the Mini is its centrepiece," said MOSI director Tony Hill.

"The new Xperiment will be bigger than its predecessor and packed full of new, exciting interactive exhibits as well as the Mini in time for the summer holidays."

The redevelopment project is scheduled to end by the autumn, creating a new Revolution Manchester gallery showcasing important pieces from the city's industrial and technical past.

MOSI's historic warehouse building will be completely redesigned to galvanise the space and make the building more user-friendly.
