The Treacherous Blue Books Of 1847

The 1847 Government Report on Education is remembered not for information it contained about the appalling state of the education system in the country, but for some awful comments on the religious and moral standing of the people of Wales. Remarks by three non-Welsh speaking Anglican commissioners about the Welsh language, nonconformity and the morals of the Welsh people caused widespread discontent. As a result, the Report came to be known as 'Brad y Llyfrau Gleision', or 'Treachery of the Blue Books'. Find out more on these fascinating web pages from the National Library of Wales.
