Life drawing at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery: Culture24 on the road for Museums at Night 2010

This year for Museums At Night Worthing Art Gallery and Museum opened its doors for a unique opportunity - life drawing taught by local artist and lecturer Dudley Sawer.

The masterclass took place in the apt location of Dudley's students show, Skin Deep. The class was not the traditional series of poses with ad hoc feedback given to individuals, but rather more considered and focusing on two standardised disciplines of drawing.

Local artist and lecturer Dudley Sawyer ran the class with life models

Starting with measured drawing and going on to explain how to scale the body and observe position points of features on both horizontal and vertical axis, we were able to see our mistakes more clearly and rectify isolated areas.

The session was followed by a short wine and snack break which allowed everyone to have a quick nibble and mingle to discuss the event between themselves in a happy and light atmosphere. The exhibition was a brilliant ice-breaker.

The session resulted in some impressive works of observation

After the break everyone got stuck straight back in. Expressive methods were on the agenda, and a series of quick poses were no problem for model Jane Flux, who had already patiently executed a number of excellent poses.

Everyone seemed to have a great time, testified to by a chorus of inquiries about the date of the next event.

"I heard about the Skin Deep session through my sister who organised the event. I liked the teaching aspect of the night but I would have prefered there to have been easels available. I'd definitely do it again, it was so much fun."

"I heard of the event via word of mouth. I'd give the event 9/10 as I really enjoyed being taught including how to observe the figure and the time taken to give me feedback."

"10/10 is cheesy, so we’ll give it 9/10. The quality of the wine knocks one off the perfect score. We'd definitely do it again – it was great."

"Dudley emailed me about the class and I was happy to come along as I'd been to a class of his before. I liked the class as stretches you and really takes you out of your comfort zone."
