Museums at Night 2010: Treasurer's at Twilight, Treasurer's House, York, Friday May 14 2010

Infamous ghost stories are woven into the history of Treasurer's House. Tucked behind York’s towering Minster, it was bequeathed by wealthy local industrialist Frank Green in the 1930s, who stipulated the exact location of furniture across the Medieval mansion and threatened to haunt the corridors forever in the event of trustees failing to heed his wishes.

Lisa Holden, the Visitor Services Manager at the House, tells tales of outraged wives stabbing or shooting their husbands after being betrayed within the ancient walls, and the smell of cigars is frequently scented by guests.

The House is full of myths and legends

Late-night openings are a rare and relatively new concept for the small team who maintain the site on behalf of the National Trust these days, but the candle-filled Great Hall and hugely atmospheric cellar have proved popular with local residents, who are being offered half-price entry for this one-off event.

"This is a great chance to see the House in a new way," says Holden, who lit the façade with pink lights in a previous escapade.

"The 24-candle chandelier will be lit in the Great Hall and the rooms will be lit with candlelight. The glint of candles on gold, the glass sparkling and shadows cast in the mirrors during Museums at Night will bring a special quality and atmosphere to the House." Just don't try and shift the sofas.
