The 11 staircases, 15 back doors and 82 chimneys at Port Eliot have been owned by the same family for 500 years.

But this former monastic port holds an Elephant in the Room – finished in paperback book pages, this 12-foot sculpture was made to raise awareness and funds for two charities concerned with elephant welfare and humanitarian efforts.

For Museums at Night, the place will be lit by glowing fires and candlelight, with picnic opportunities in the garden (let’s pray for good weather) and views of the estuary.

And there’s musical accompaniment in the form of a concert by the East Cornwall Bach Choir in the adjacent Priory Church, with ticket buyers given two-for-one entrance to the house. It would be hard to imagine a more harmonious meeting of sonic and landscape elegance.

  • Concert begins 7.30pm, book online. Gardens open from 8pm. Admission £8/£4. .
