Derby’s QUAD will be hosting one of the world’s largest film projects in a Museums at Night 2012 special event on May 18.

The Derby Soap Opera is an ambitious mass participation project that will be written, filmed and performed entirely by the people of Derby, directed by the renowned Italian filmmaker and artist Marinella Senatore.

In preparation for the live events, Senatore has been leading workshops, at QUAD and dance-focussed Derby venue Deda, teaching local residents the basic elements of film making, acting, dancing and script writing.

The very life of the city and the stories that the people have to tell will be fashioned into the script and filmed on purpose-built sets at QUAD and at different locations around the city.

“QUAD has always been ambitious when it comes to giving Derby a voice in the arts and now everyone in the city is being invited to join its biggest project yet,” says Nigel Powlson, of the Derby Telegraph.

“A movie about Derby, made here by the people of the city, is sure to be a landmark project that will fire imaginations in 2012.”

Senatore specialises in films created by communities, effectively helping them create their own stories to highlight the collaborative aspect and the exchange of ideas of the creative process.

Residents will be able to explore the film set and local groups can book the sets for their own use in the film, complete with filming equipment.

In addition to the film set, an interactive resource area will provide a recording station where aspiring filmmakers can create their own shorts about themselves or Derby.

The 40-minute film will be filmed in May and July. It will also be screened at the Festé weekend in September.
