Museums at Night 2011: Watford Museum, Watford, May 14 2011

The brick walls of the Watford Museum provided the curious canvas for a pair of BAFTA nominees during this year's Museums at Night weekend.

Animation duo Shaun Clark and Kim Noce, otherwise known as Mewlab, turned the windows blue as giant fish swam across them and then white as a crowd roared in front of an arcade-style football match.

Lightning blew an owl off its perch, soldiers marched under the glare of air raid searchlights and a virtual pinball game turned the panes of glass multicoloured and luminous. All of it was soundtracked by composer and musician Hutch Demouilpied.

“It took so much work, so it was very emotional to see it all come together so well and get such lovely ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ from visitors,” reports Heritage Officer Sarah Priestley, who also enticed all-girl trio Minnie Birch to provide aural intoxication for visitors once they were inside.

“The band wrote a really beautiful song for the museum. I went round hugging the animators and musicians. It’s great to be able to show what we do and how we connect with other museums.

"People said some really lovely stuff – one visitor gave it a score of 50 out of 10.”
