If the half-price carrots on the see-in-the-dark menu at the Tank Museum's cafe don’t sharpen your sights, the night vision goggles on offer in their army patrols should do the trick this Museums at Night.

“We are very privileged to work with the army on this,” says the museum’s Nicky Croom, who will be enlisting the Bovington Expert Support Team to fire up their engines.

“They will be taking visitors on patrols with goggles in our new Afghanistan exhibition, and they’ll set up their camera with thermal targets to show how it’s used on the frontline.

“We get our hands on some very expensive kit which visitors wouldn’t be able to see anywhere else.”

Last year’s event was low-key – “we weren’t sure how much interest there would be”, admits Croom – but their plan proved hugely popular, leading to an open-house session with cut price entry this time around.

“We aren’t a bit museum in a big city, but we still have loads going on,” she says.

“It is always a fun event to plan and gives me the chance to try out new activities showing another side to tanks and the army.

“It’s a nice challenge for me to come up with something new and exciting for people to enjoy.”

Show and tell activities on the blackouts, artefact handling with objects from the blitz, face painting, craft activities and trench and tank tours are also on the camouflaged cards.

  • Runs 6pm-11pm. Admission £3.75-£6 (family ticket £13.75-£16). Check out the full listing for all the details.
