The author of the popular History Keepers series is a Patron of organisers Kids in Museums and is actively backing the campaign, which sees young people given meaningful roles and working alongside staff in a museum, gallery or historic home.

Museums signing up to the day, which takes place on Friday November 22, can also win Dibben for an event of their choosing at their venue if they register to take part before October 31.

Dibben, whose History Keepers books are all about kids being put in control and saving the world, says he “really believes, if you put young people in charge, all sorts of incredible things happen”.

This was certainly true of last year's Takeover Day which saw more than 1,500 children, from toddlers to young adults, taking charge of 85 museums, galleries and historic homes.

Children designed exhibitions and interactive exhibits and delighted visitors with guided tours and special events. They even conserved artefacts and helped museums improve their services for visitors.

“Museums will be surprised and delighted by what kids can offer to them in new skills, interesting approaches and fresh ideas,” adds Dibben. “And museums must remember that one day is never enough.

“Takeover Day is only the first day of putting young people permanently at the heart of a museum.”
