Weather Report 2 showing at the Newlyn Art Gallery until September 3, is an exhibition of the work of twelve artists who have been inspired by the powerful Cornish landscape.
Following on from last year’s exhibition, Weather Report 1, each artist has taken landscape painting further towards abstraction in his or her interpretations of the natural environment.

Bernard Irwin, a contributing artist told the 24 Hour Museum how the Cornish landscape lends itself to abstraction.
“It is the richness of the texture of form, there are a lot of layers of history in the landscape. There are a lot of painters inspired by the land in a lot of different ways.”

Conveying a mixture of atmospheres and sensations, a variety of media and mark-making techniques have been utilised, from bold one-stroke brush marks, random splatters, scratching and expressive gesture, to subtle colour play and process led imagery.
Collectively, the artists are mindful of the elements, reflecting the fluctuating conditions of the land, sea, wind, rain and sunlight.

Artists are particularly attracted to the South West for its extraordinary light and ever changing qualities.
Weather report 2 is the sixth in a series of showcase exhibitions by the Newlyn Society of Artists who are based at the gallery. Founded over a hundred years ago, the NSA has always been a forum for contemporary art.
