Primary School pupils will take up the scissors in a unique performance event featuring free hair cuts at top salon Saks in Newcastle city centre.

Haircuts by Children has been brought to the North-East by Canadian arts company Mammalian Diving Reflex. The piece has been performed across the world, setting out to explore issues of personal vanity and trust in the younger generation.

It forms part of a new regional festival, Wunderbar, scheduled to run from November 6 –15 2009. A series of performances, visual arts and happenings, it sets out to instil a sense of wonder to match the name.

Festival partner Stella Hall, from Culture10, says the children will benefit from their new styling skills. “Our hair helps shape our identity and impacts on how people judge us,” she points out.

“It will be interesting to see what happens when we let our guard down and let a child’s imagination change the way we look.”

Book yourself in for the weekend of November 7 and 8 by calling Saks in Newcastle on 0191 261 2989 and asking for Haircuts by Children. Visit Wunderbar Festival for the full festival programme.
