Belgrave Hall and Gardens, Leicester, is holding a new room display that showcases the furniture of Ernest Gimson. Dine With Gimson runs from February 10 2007 and shows how the Leicester born designer and maker was an influential figure in the British Arts and Crafts Movement.
Gimson’s work is exhibited to highlight his delicate craftsmanship and to allow the audience to soak up the ambience of an original Victorian dining room setting.

The room of beautifully created furniture is a credit to Gimson, whose work was once described by architect W R Lethaby as “one kind of ‘perfect’…useful and right, pleasantly shaped and finished, good enough but not too good for ordinary use.”
Gimson was born in 1864 and won early accolades for his decorative plasterwork and embroideries before becoming one of Britain’s leading furniture designers.
