A museum telling the story of a predominantly working-class religious denomination in a manner that raises questions about faith and identity in the contemporary world. Much of the museum is housed in a chapel dating to 1829. The graveyard opposite is the final resting place of Primitive methodist founder, Hugh Bourne.

Study Day: Demon Drink? Temperance and the Working Class

8 June 2013

Dr Annemarie McAllister will look at ‘Picturing the Demon Drink’. Jon Curtis will discuss ‘Losing the Boozing?’ Peter Crummett will share his extensive collection of temperance medals, and Jill Barber will look at sources for Primitive Methodism and the working class.

There will also be an opportunity to discuss what it all means for today.

What is the earliest piece of PM commemorative pottery? Find out more about love feast cups, banners, items seized because of civil disobedience, and the story behind Hugh Bourne’s watch!


17 August: Introduction to Printed Material in Englesea Brook Library

See some fascinating early Primitive Methodist literature, such as Magazines, Hymn Books, and a recipe for curing a cow choking on a turnip! And discover why PM Ministers wrote ‘pulp fiction’.
