Warriors of the Plains: 200 years of Native North American honour and ritual
Ceremonial shirts, moccasins and tomahawks, alongside photographs of these objects in use, bring to life the world of Native North American warfare and ritual from 1800 to the present day. On tour from the British Museum.
The exhibition focuses on the material culture of Native North American Indians of the Plains between 1800 and the present, and the importance of the objects in a social and ceremonial context.
Tribes’ men were expected to join a ‘warrior society’ – a social, political and ritual group that engaged in warfare and organised ceremonial life.
The societies played a prominent role in battles, offering members the opportunity to gain honours through individual acts of bravery such as stealing horses, capturing women, and taking scalps during war raids. These societies, however, had a rich ritual life that was marked by a strong sense of spirituality. In their ceremonies society members made use of objects such as pipes, rattles and headdresses, as these were significant to their shared ideas of ritual and honour.
The exhibition explores the world of the Plains Indians through exceptional examples of feather headdresses, shields, moccasins, painted hides, scalps, pipes, tomahawks, and traditional and contemporary dress. Although many of these items may seem initially familiar from popular culture, the exhibition uncovers the deeper ritual significance of these iconic objects.
A selection of photographs shows past and present contexts of the objects used in these societies. The legacy of the warrior societies is also examined, revealing their crucial role in maintaining tribal identity among Plains Indians today.
Supported by the generosity of the Dorset Foundation.

All Other Things Being Equal
The Ecuadorian Amazon is one of the most biodiverse and endangered regions of our planet. Many people want to protect the biodiversity that remains, but the reality on the ground is a complex dilemma. Local economic necessity means that trees are valued for their timber more than for their crucial role in the ecosystem.
This exhibition, based on three years of personal research experience by scientist and photographer, Johan Oldekop, mixes photographs and sounds with graphical representations of socio-economic data and specimens from the Museum’s natural history collection. The materials, collected between 2006 and 2010, trace some of the complex relationships between humans and the environment in one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots.
The research this exhibition is based on was supported by the German International Cooperation (GIZ GmbH), the Royal Geographical Society and the Wingate Foundation.

Urban Naturalist
Urban Naturalist is a series of friendly, practical workshops run by leading naturalists. From wild food-foraging and composting to bird song and insect identification, explore biodiversity on our doorstep.
27 April: Water life.
There are many weird and wonderful creatures that live in our local lakes, rivers and even garden ponds! Join ecologist Rob Mansfield for an exploration of the life in our local waters. From the microscopic plants to the not so tiny bugs, we will look at how to collect and identify the many creatures that we may find.
25 May: Spring wild food forage.
May is a wonderfully rich time of year for anyone interested in finding wild foods for free. There are still a number of edible tender leaves and shoots to be found, and there is more than a splash of colour to be seen from many of our edible flowers which are bursting through. At this time of year you can really sense the transition between spring and summer happening so unsurprisingly it's a great time for finding the tail end of the spring fungi, and the onset of the summertime varieties, so with some luck (and a little rain!) we may just find some excellent edible wild mushrooms too. With Jesper Lauder, in association with Cracking Good Food.
29 June: Herbal medicine walk.
June is a wonderfully rich time of year for anyone interested in exploring their natural surroundings and finding wild foods for free. There are many edible leaves and shoots to be found, with more than a splash of colour from the delectably edible flowers bursting through. Experience a real sense of the transition between spring and summer; observing, touching and tasting the flourishing delights on offer. June is a great time for discovering the final stages of spring fungi and the onset of summertime varieties, so with bit of luck (and a little rain) we may find some edible wild mushrooms too. With Jesper Lauder and Cracking Good Food.

April's conversation will be: Former Glories Revealed. Conservation students Gabrielle Flexer and Shiree Roberts will talk through the challenges involved in reviving a magnificent Norwegian headdress and a Japanese lacquer tray. They will discuss the major issues in conservation today and how thinking has changed through the ages and across continents.
May's conversation will be: The kneeling statue of the Admiral Hor: Ships and sculpture in Sixth Century BC Egypt. Often overlooked because of its damaged state, the kneeling statue of Hor represents an important military man of the Egyptian Twenty-Sixth Dynasty (c. 595-589 BC). Hor was Admiral of Egypt’s royal Mediterranean fleet at a time of increasingly strained international relations. Campbell Price, Curator of Egypt and the Sudan at the Museum, will discuss Hor’s role and the meanings of his temple statue.
June's conversation will celebrate World Environment Day. Rachel Webster, Curator of Botany at Manchester Museum, will be talking about collecting tree specimens.
