Collecting trees
22 June-6 October 2013.
Trees are important to all of us. People plant trees to commemorate loved ones, climb them as children (and sometimes as adults) and worry about them being cut down. Collecting Trees investigates the important relationship we have with trees and the impact they have on the world around us. The exhibition will illustrate the different ways people think about trees and how they are valued by different cultures.
We want to collect objects to keep the collections relevant to modern visitors and fit for future use. Tell us what objects related to trees you think the Museum should collect. Come in and add your stories to our collection.
The objects we’ve collected are part of our ‘Trees - collecting to connect’ project demonstrating how important trees are. This exhibition forms part of the ‘Festival of Ecology’ taking place across the UK to celebrate 100 years of the British Ecological Society.

Warriors of the Plains: 200 years of Native North American honour and ritual
Ceremonial shirts, moccasins and tomahawks, alongside photographs of these objects in use, bring to life the world of Native North American warfare and ritual from 1800 to the present day. On tour from the British Museum.
The exhibition focuses on the material culture of Native North American Indians of the Plains between 1800 and the present, and the importance of the objects in a social and ceremonial context.
Tribes’ men were expected to join a ‘warrior society’ – a social, political and ritual group that engaged in warfare and organised ceremonial life.
The societies played a prominent role in battles, offering members the opportunity to gain honours through individual acts of bravery such as stealing horses, capturing women, and taking scalps during war raids. These societies, however, had a rich ritual life that was marked by a strong sense of spirituality. In their ceremonies society members made use of objects such as pipes, rattles and headdresses, as these were significant to their shared ideas of ritual and honour.
The exhibition explores the world of the Plains Indians through exceptional examples of feather headdresses, shields, moccasins, painted hides, scalps, pipes, tomahawks, and traditional and contemporary dress. Although many of these items may seem initially familiar from popular culture, the exhibition uncovers the deeper ritual significance of these iconic objects.
A selection of photographs shows past and present contexts of the objects used in these societies. The legacy of the warrior societies is also examined, revealing their crucial role in maintaining tribal identity among Plains Indians today.
Supported by the generosity of the Dorset Foundation.

April's conversation will be: Former Glories Revealed. Conservation students Gabrielle Flexer and Shiree Roberts will talk through the challenges involved in reviving a magnificent Norwegian headdress and a Japanese lacquer tray. They will discuss the major issues in conservation today and how thinking has changed through the ages and across continents.
May's conversation will be: The kneeling statue of the Admiral Hor: Ships and sculpture in Sixth Century BC Egypt. Often overlooked because of its damaged state, the kneeling statue of Hor represents an important military man of the Egyptian Twenty-Sixth Dynasty (c. 595-589 BC). Hor was Admiral of Egypt’s royal Mediterranean fleet at a time of increasingly strained international relations. Campbell Price, Curator of Egypt and the Sudan at the Museum, will discuss Hor’s role and the meanings of his temple statue.
June's conversation will celebrate World Environment Day. Rachel Webster, Curator of Botany at Manchester Museum, will be talking about collecting tree specimens.

Ian Panter and Conserving the Past – Voices from the Ancient Worlds gallery
Our picture of what life was like in the past would be very incomplete if we didn't conserve and display ancient wood. Unfortunately once removed from its environment, waterlogged wood dries, cracks and crumbles. Wood from the very dry conditions of ancient Egypt needs careful treatment too. When the industrial revolution hit Manchester, the negative environmental effects meant that many of the Lichen species died out. This was because they could not survive in the heavily polluted air.
