A picture of Nubian statues

Grave Secrets: Tales of the Ancient Nubians

19 November 2011 — 4 March 2012 *on now

An exhibition of bone specimens and artefacts excavated during the Archaeological Survey of Nubia (1907-1911), revealing the lives of the inhabitants of ancient Nubia, Egypt’s southern neighbour.

The anatomical study of these remains was co-ordinated by Sir Grafton Elliot Smith, former Professor of Anatomy at The University of Manchester, who is credited as one of the founders of Palaeopathology, the study of ancient disease. One of the most important outcomes of the project was the creation of several important palaeopathology study collections, now dispersed throughout the UK. The collection contains evidence for Nubian health and disease, and as such is an invaluable resource for studying ancient Nubia.

Grave Secrets reveals what has been learnt about life and death in this ancient civilisation and how the museums and laboratories of today are continuing to tell the story of the ancient Nubian people.

The exhibition features specimens from the Nubian Pathological Collection housed in the Natural History Museum, London, material from the KNH Centre for Biomedical Egyptology at The University of Manchester, displayed alongside excavation photos and artefacts from The Manchester Museum.

Shells with patterns that can be explained by morphogenesis

Alan Turing and Life’s Enigma

24 March — 18 November 2012

Inspired by 1950s design and combining Alan Turing’s notes with museum objects, this exhibition documents Turing’s investigation into one of the great mysteries of nature: how complex shapes and patterns arise from simple balls of cells.

This year marks the centenary of the birth of Alan Turing, one of the leading thinkers of the 20th century. Best known as a pioneer in the development of the computer and for helping crack the Enigma code during World War II, Alan Turing also made a single contribution to biology. From 1948 until his death in 1954, Turing worked on the early computers at The University of Manchester, working in the building next door to The Manchester Museum. At a time when people knew very little about genetics or DNA, Turing used the early computer to try to crack how a soup of cells and chemicals could transform itself and grow into complex natural shapes - a subject known as morphogenesis. In an incredible article published in 1952, Turing suggested that everything from the spots and stripes on animals to the arrangement of pine cones and flowers could be explained by the interactions between two chemicals. Turing’s work in this area is intimately connected with the timing of his trial and conviction for homosexuality, and his subsequent ‘treatment’ with a course of chemical injections.

Find out about the impact and continuing relevance of Turing’s work to experts at The University of Manchester and take part in a range of public events for all ages and interests.

A photo of Whitworth Park from 1911

Showcase Lecture - The Park in the City: Whitworth Park Community Archaeology and History Project

7 March 2012

With Hannah Cobb, Melanie Giles and Sian Jones, The University of Manchester.
Public parks are important components of urban landscapes throughout the UK, a response to the immense changes associated with nineteenth-century industrialisation and urbanisation. In this seminar, we discuss the materiality of the urban Park with reference to a new interdisciplinary project focusing on Whitworth Park in Manchester. Through the combined use of archival, archaeological, oral historical and social research, the project explores the changing role of the urban park in terms of class, consumption, citizenship, leisure, memory and place.
This project is a collaboration between the University of Manchester's Department of Archaeology, The Manchester Museum, the Whitworth Art Gallery, Friends of Whitworth Park and the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relation Resource Centre, and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, The University of Manchester and Manchester City Council.

AfterHours at the Manchester Museum, Night at the Musuem

18 May 2012

AfterHours are evening social events where you encounter the unexpected at the Manchester Museum. Artists, scientists, filmmakers, writers and musicians animate our collections in special one-off performances.

Our theme for Night at the Museum will be linked in with our stunning new Living Worlds gallery. Living Worlds explores the connections between all living things, including us, and shows how we can all shape the future by the choices we make.

Watch out for details and themes for the event.
